The Southerners Sports Club Bangkok was established back in 1994, thanks to a group of Australians and New Zealanders who entered a rugby team in a local Thai league, which they decided to call “The Southerners Sports Club”. Today the Southerners Sports Club is an informal club in Bangkok where expats and Thai people come together regularly to enjoy playing sport in a very friendly environment and to socialise. A Club which was initially started by a small group of antipodiens; has over the years grown in numbers as well as nationalities.
The sporting sections that make up this Club are: Rugby (men’s: 7’s, 10’s, 15’s, vets), Netball (currently four women’s team playing in the Bangkok Netball League), Touch Rugby (mixed), Cricket (currently three men team) and a newly established Rugby League section. They also have a Monday evening bootcamp, run from 6:30 – 7:30 pm. The bootcamp is free for all Southerners members.
You do not need to be a sports person to join Southerners and get involved. It is encouraged that people join Southerners to socialize and meet new people. The Southerners organise many events, including the monthly TGIF drinks, a day at the horse races, an annual Khao San Road Tour and their main annual event of the year is the Southerners Annual Ball (a formal event with the aim of raising money for a local charity called Nak Suu).
The main goal of Southerners Sports Club is not only to provide a community for like-minded sports people in Bangkok, but to also help their members improve their sports skills in a very relaxed and social atmosphere. It seems this is something the Club are doing very well at promoting when it comes to achieving that goal as they celebrate 21 years of success in Bangkok!
