If you’ve been an expat for any length of time here in Bangkok there is certainly going to be things you love about the city and equally – some things you hate. This goes for any city but Bangkok has got its own list of unique ups and downs. Here’s a quick list of the wonderful and awful things about BKK.
The No-So Good
Why does this city try to smoother us with its hot, wet blanket. That is both a literal and metaphorical term. We have been enjoying some decent weather lately but this city is mostly just a few degrees away from a gas chamber.
It’s no secret Bangkok is congested. It’s one of the few places in the world where Google has no idea how to predict how long its going to take you to get somewhere. The traffic adds to the constant haze around the city. The country has been rated as having some of the most dangerous roads on earth, Bangkok certainly adding a large part to the country wide problem.
The Simple Things
Getting your internet installed, buying a sim card, paying your water bill or replacing a lost key to your condo may seem like a simple two minute task but can often end up taking ages and may wind up involving a crowd of people to help sort out your small problem.
The Not-So Bad
Rather than snowbanks up to the streetlights or having dull grey skies most of the year, the sunny days of Bangkok are something you can look forward to enjoying most days of the year. If you can’t stand the heat an air-conditioned mall or restaurant is never more than a few steps away.
While the streets are chaotic, the transport is cheap with so many options. The BTS is clean, affordable and efficient . Taxis are inexpensive by western standards and if you need to hop a short distance tuk tuks or motos can get you around quickly for next to nothing.
The Simple Things
Thai’s are some of the most helpful and friendly people on the planet. They have an unorthodox way of going about things at times but are keen to please and always help with a smile on their face.
