HomeGovernment halts trackable sim project…says does not want to disrupt tourism

Last July the NBTC (National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission) ordered all operators to use traceable sim cards for tourists in any event of terrorism.

The project was rolled out by NBTC (National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission) by having traceable sims for tourists so all call events, history and location of the user could be tracked. Malaysia is the only ASEAN country using this technology due to national security reasons.

The Tourism and Sports Ministry does not want the tourism industry to be disrupted especially when a country’s major economic development is based on it. The ministry is concerned that traceable sim is against the privacy of people hence could cause a major tourism impact in the country’s growing economy.

Therefore, government has halted all components (including public speaking) of the project. It also created a lot of negative criticism from people during the public hearing
