Our new column, “In the Soi” is all about introducing local neighborhood’s unique spots that you might not know about! Following OnNut and Ari, we now introduce you to another popular residential neighborhood that has it all: Rama 9! One of Rama 9’s many charms is perhaps its golden location: conveniently close to other business districts yet further away enough for a more residential vibe. Below are some of the activities Rama 9 has to offer!
What’s a better way to battle Bangkok’s heat than some ice-skating sesh?! On 7th floor of Central Grand Rama 9, The Rink Ice Arena is an open-space skating rinks for people of all levels. The Elite Learn to Skate program is especially popular with beginners, with classes twice a week for 5 weeks. All their programs are certified by Ice Hockey Association of Thailand, so rest assured that these people know what they’re doing!
If you’re looking for a new workout activity to try, why not take advantage of the fact that you’re living in the birthplace of the world renowned martial arts that is Thai Boxing? One of our favorites from Bangkok’s night markets, Rodfai Night Market Ratchada will undoubtedly make your night. If you’re tired of Khaosan and are looking for a more local alternative, head over here for a change. There are plenty of food vendors offering everything from simple noodle dishes to grilled seafood. Furthermore, several bars surrounding the market area offer affordable alcoholic smoothies accompanied by live music.
Art in Paradise is a popular tourist attractions with branches all over Thailand. It is a mix between art gallery and museum, showcasing unique displays that are very Instagrammable. Exhibits include dioramas, dinosaurs, 3-D safari, or ocean themed scenes. The Rama 9 branch might be a little smaller compared to other branches, but its convenient location inside Esplanade mall makes it popular nonetheless.
Previously a vintage furniture warehouse, 1 Of a Kind now transforms to a chic cafe on Rama 9 Street. The cafe is unique in that it retains its antique vibe, giving it a cozy and hip ambience. The classic decor such as old photographs or the old arcade corner will surely satisfy the hipsters as well.
Emmie’s might seems like another restaurant/cafe, but the relaxing ambience makes it worth a visit nonetheless. The space is clean with simple white decor, and offers both indoor and outdoor zones. The giant tree in the middle of the room, however, makes you feel like you’re sitting in nature even though you’re still in an air-conditioned room.
