April is also the hottest month of the year here. Songkran makes this month really specially and it’s a major event for this month.
Where to celebrate Songkran in Bangkok
Songkran is also known as traditionally a Thai New Year. It is the biggest friendly water fight festival in Thailand which last for 3 days during the course of April 13th to 15th. The traditional water pouring is a symbol of washing all of the bad away and to bring good fortune into their life and family. It is also important to pay respect to statues of Buddha and get blessings.
Many tourists consider travelling during this time and have the time of life soaking up in most exciting water fight with all random people around. The roads will be filled with people spraying and dropping water from their buildings or pickup truck. Big water pumps will be installed at few places and you will be catch by surprise from every corner with usual water guns and buckets.
Silom and Khao Sarn Road are the most popular places to visit during Songkran. The places are packed with mostly young Thais and plenty of tourists. The crowd is fully packed and you slowly move with it, getting absolutely wet with water pouring from all corners. There is lot of snacks food and drinks store installed on the way so store back your energy in. Make sure to carry a waterproof bag and store all your valuables in it.

Khaosan road transforms for three days into a water fighting area. Get ready to wet by icy cold water and get to meet people from different parts of the world. Khaosan road is a heaven for backpackers and that’s what make it really different from other party places. The bars, discos are all open late until night so that you do not miss the booze.
Khao san is well known within backpackers and is fully packed during weekends, but at the time of this festival it gets more crowds from abroad as well as many locals hit to this spot at this time. The crowd is fully packed and you slowly move with it, getting absolutely wet with water pouring from all corners. The stages are set with DJs around by with loud music. Lot of vendors is there selling food, drinks, water guns and bucket of cold water with ice in it. The events go late till night so it’s preferable to go during evening time.
RCA is another popular spot where people land during songkran. Although this spot is more popular for nightlife and so most of water and foam late night parties are well enjoyed here. Most of the people prefer RCA as it’s played at night and hence you avoid the scorching heat of daytime. There are plenty of clubs there with different theme celebrating songkran night in their house. Make sure to carry plastic bags and dress in neon theme clothes, avoid any expensive party wears as you going to soak up in water and foam.
Sanam Luang is also one place where songkran celebration occurs but more in traditional and sacred way. Most of the merit making is done here as Buddha image is taken out of the museum and guided along the street where all people pay respect by showering some water over the statue on the first day.
Later for the next two days the statue is kept out of museum for people to pay respect who have missed the opportunity on the first day. Lot of elders comes to this place with their family to get blessings. There is also demonstration of thai dance and culture on the street by group of people in front of the statue as it slowly crawls through the traffic
Wat Arun, there is not only clubs and street where you can go to play but also there are lot of temples which host the songkran festival by making merit to Buddha statues and monks. It starts from 10:00 am with morning chant and offering of alms to the monks.
Over the course of three days we will see people cleaning their home and replacing their old items to new items in a way of bringing good luck. Sprinkling of ceremonial water on Buddha images and monks also takes places at temples.
